That’s Not When She Died And Those Aren’t Her Parents

May 5, 2016 in Allied Families, Find A Grave, Solving Puzzels

I took a break from working on my own tree and was helping other people with theirs.  I’m over that now.  I’ll write about just why I’m over it in a day or so.  Right now, I want to talk about Margret Price Fulton.

She was born, said her husband, in “Macome, Oakland Co., Mich” 56 years, 11 months, and 16 days before she died.  He was born in New York, so I don’t blame him for getting the geography wrong, though I’m a bit upset he didn’t know her father’s first name.  John Robert Fulton married Margret Price sometime between 1850 and 1860.  In 1850 they are both with their birth families; he in Shiawassee County, and she in Macomb.  His family appears to be a bit confusing. He’s living with a couple named Skutt, and what appears to be a brother named Gilbert Fulton.  She’s with her parents, Uriah and Martha Taft Price.  Even if her mother’s maiden name wasn’t given on her death certificate, in 1850 her mother’s father is living with them.

So life goes on for the Fulton family.  They have a passel of children, one of them being Ella Fulton who went on to marry William F Brink who married the widow of Raymond Robinson, the person who is the focus of my research.  William Brink and Ella Fulton had a baby who died 3 days after birth in 1899.  They’re together in the 1900 census, but then they both disappear for the 1910 census.  He shows up again in 1920, married to Raymond’s widow, then he gets into trouble and is found in 1930 and 1940 in the Michigan State Prison listed as an inmate.  Raymond’s widow, now William Brink’s wife, died in 1933.  But I kept wondering, what happened to Ella Fulton Brink?  I still don’t know.

While following her parents to see if she ended up back with them at some point, I found a Find A Grave memorial for Margret.  It gave the year of her death as 1909, but her husband, John, was listed as a widower in 1900.  I found the death certificate for this person, but it didn’t sit right.  Her parent’s names were given as Aaron and Julie Martin.  What?  So I went to digging and stumbled across the death certificate of “Margret Fuller” who died on 11 Feb 1900, before the 1900 Federal census.  That makes sense.  The parents were given as Dyer Price and Marta Taft.  That made sense in a way.  Dyer was wrong, but, okay.  The informant was John Fulton.  Yes.  This is Ella’s mother.  And it explains why, in the 1900 census, she’s living with her husband, William Brink, and two teens with the last name of Fulton.  These would be her siblings.  All of the evidence is pointing to someone creating a Find A Grave memorial for Ella’s mother using the wrong information from the wrong lady’s death certificate.

I’ve submitted corrections and messaged the FAG memorial creator.  I even posted the correct death certificate to the memorial.   I hope it works.

Now I just have to find out what happened to Ella Fulton Brink…
