Griffin-Lemon

March 24, 2016 in Allied Families, Griffin, Lemon, Meredith

The Griffins are related to me through the Merediths.  This is my father’s mother’s side.  Clara Herr Lemon was the daughter of Rebecca Meredith and Charles Herr.  Rebecca Meredith was the daughter of Rose Ruby and Cyrus Meredith.  Cyrus Meredith was the son of Rebecca Smith and Jesse Meredith.  Jesse Meredith was the son of Charles Meredith and Miriam Griffin.  Clara married Russell Tiffin Lemon in Oakland County, Michigan, in 1920-something.  I forget off the top of my head.  For a long time, I was trying to figure out if all the Lemons in Michigan were related to me in one way or another, so I started trees for each one I found and followed them as far back as I could.  One of the Lemons I followed was a man named Mason Lemon who died in Mecosta County, Michigan.  Mecosta County being the county adjoining the county I now live, I was definitely going to follow him to see if we were related.  It turns out we are, but not in the way I thought.

Mason Lemon was the son of…well, that’s unclear.  He may have been the son of a man named Samuel Lemon who died by drowning in New York.  His death certificate (Mason’s) is confusing at best and totally incorrect, giving the name of his wife as his mother.  Mason was married to Jane Lovesey.  They had a daughter named Amelia, born in 1854 in Michigan.  She married twice: the first time to Morris Mitchell.  They had a son, Albert, who was born in 1876.  Morris died in May of 1880 and Albert died in 1881.  Amelia then married Courtland Griffin, my 3rd cousin 3x removed.  Sometimes when you follow someone because of a gut feeling, it turns out you were right to follow them, but not for the reason you thought you should.

Genealogy is endlessly fascinating!
